With her larger-than-life sculpture "The blue soldier" the artist Gala von Reichenfels has proven that furniture coatings are not only used on tables and cabinets. This 210 cm large artwork from lime wood will be shown in an exhibition of the "Künstlersonderbund" in Berlin as from September.

The work on the “Blue Soldier” started in Karlheinz Kowarsch’s carpentry workshop in Fürth in November 2013. The artist Gala von Reichenfels, born in Berlin, chose regional lime wood as material for the sculpture of a disabled soldier. This was intended to start an official discussion which should focus the people’s lack of interest regarding missions abroad by the army with a view to peacekeeping. Finally the artwork was completed by the end of June 2014 and presented to the public for the first time within the scope of a vernissage in Fürth.

Surface finishing of the Blue Soldier

The 2-component PUR-Füller H 1336 from JORDAN Lacke was used for priming, as it convinces by its fast drying and good grindability which is important considering the many roundings and the unusual form. After the subsequent intermediate grounding, further steps could be started. The coloured surfaces on the sculpture were painted in different colour shades with PD 150. Thus the body was painted with 2 applied layers in sky blue and reflects the colour of the United Nations. The colours of the Germany flag were applied with a brush with PD 150 in red (RAL 3002) and black (RAL 9055). The golden areas were lovingly faced with impact metal. Regarding the flag the artist deliberately dispensed with a transparent top coat in order to achieve a slight brush structure on the surface.
